Ikea has long held a special place in my heart. When I was studying at Nanyang Technological University, the Singapore Ikea was a weekend date place, the catalogue hugely coveted, their LACK side tables a fairly common fixture in dorm rooms. I remembered it after speaking to a 17 year old about to go to college – a useful tip is to “wallpaper” your dorm room with nice wrapping paper – you can change the look of your first ever personal space away from home very quickly and relatively cheaply. I think the LACK tables cost between SGD 19 and 30, back in the day. I remember this with nostalgia because back then when you were a student, it was a big deal.
It was also a big deal that to get the annual Ikea catalogue, you need to sign up for some membership thing and to be eligible for that, you need to spend SGD 300 in one receipt. I remember this because I could never spend SGD 300. So one day I tallied my big shopping spree (maybe SGD 150 thereabouts) and then turned around and asked the people behind me if I could have their receipts too. My friend averted his eyes 😀 But Ikea catalogues!! Whoot! And then now you see them everywhere and you can just pick them up for free.
Ok so anyway then one day we decided to make a trip over because Ikea does have a children’s department and we scored outsize doll house furniture and an LED light up box (for displaying beloved Legos) and art supplies on the cheap.
And the awesome thing about the dolls’ house furniture is……. even the cardboard box has lotsa cut outs you can color!
My memory of the Singapore Ikea (which has wayy more space than the cramped HK one in Causeway Bay) is they even had restaurant area and etc… Well this one is very erm….. Hong Kong style-standing-room-only-for-quick-munchies. But we tried to pull it off anyway. (Yes exhausting). And there’s lotsa well-behaved local school kids (I think mostly middle school and up) around us too. Guess Ikea is still a really good way to furnish when you’re a skint youngster (and beyond!)
Last time I “came here with the kids” Rockstar was finishing Kindy and spilled his whole box of popcorn on the floor. The Miss was in my noticeable tummy 🙂 We picked popcorn together (:D) before a nice auntie with a broom and scoop out of nowhere clucked us away. Since I’ve famously messed myself up in public from pregnancy symptoms I guess this time was better 🙂
And I just had to put up some dream cubby hole kids’ rooms pics (yes these two really were attracted to these two settings – how gender specific and cliched can you get??).
And that last picture….. Is there for sentimental reasons. Don’t suppose anyone would hazard a guess why I got sentimental about that….. 😉
Lack side tables? I have so many of them in my house now, hahaha. They are really useful.
The two Rockstars were really seriously shopping with carts full of items in Ikea! So cute!
What was Miss Rockstar eating in the photos above? I could not tell from the photos.
The last photo – is your dream room?
Serious!! You have lack too??? Ikea is really a marvel aren’t they…
The Miss is eating a “vegetable medallion,” I think it was – basically a potato cake with broccoli.
I keep certain pics/ videos for huge sentimental reasons (that are not sentimental to anyone else) – it’s just a certain possibly unrelated thing in a picture/ video that triggers a happy, likely unrelated memory or thought… Just a very personal way I find a “happy place”… Ditto certain books too… It’s something I’ve always done.. In Singapore I had a huge love of highways too… totally unrelated to anything else (but in HK of course it’s kinda yucky) but it brings out the happy in me…
That pic… I was captivated by the picture of the old couple… As a college kid Ikea was Disneyland for me, it was a huge weekend and date place during that time of my life… Obviously that was almost 20 years ago… So what looked to me like the old couple’s room………
I don’t think Ikea here sells the vegetable medallion. Good way to get children to eat broccoli, not that Miss Rockstar needs that since she loves vegetables anyway.
Thank you for sharing. I totally get you about certain items being triggers of happy, warm and fuzzy feelings. Certain music and songs do it for me too. 白頭到老 room – so sweet.
May all of you have a good weekend!
