Rockstar: Mum! I want to bring my backpack!
Me: Did Daddy say no?
Rockstar: Yess!!
Me: Then why are you asking me, you know The Standard Agreement Between Parents – one parent says no, the other parent doesn’t get to say yes. You’re supposed to convince the parent that says no. Not to mention he can hear you right now…
This continues on til after bath time….
Rockstar: Mu-ummm! Daddy said yes. Where’s my backpack?
Me: (Coming into the room) Congratulations, dear. You convinced Daddy with the strength of your arguments.
Kings: (Playing along) Yes, Rockstar. You have convinced me to let you bring your backpack on the plane.
Rockstar: Great, and what about my bike?

Rockstar: Mum. What are we going to eat (when we get to Japan?)
Me: ?! You eat Japanese, don’t you?
Rockstar: Japanese eat a lot of rice. I’m bored with rice.
Me: They also eat a lot of noodles.
Rockstar: Yay noodles! <pause> Wait. What noodles?

Exiting immigration..
Me: See that? Plant and animal quarantine. That means they keep any plants or animals that you bring in separate for awhile to make sure you dont make the local plants and animals sick.
Rockstar: And why are there police here?
Me: Airport security.
Rockstar: <whispers – apparently ninja have superb hearing> They need them even in ninja country?
Me: Ninja have pets too. <feel very pleased with myself>
